Acknowledgements
This project has been ongoing for several years and has involved talents from many people. The project has always involved various levels of students but their participation has become increasingly important in recent years.
Within NRC from present and previous staff, I express my thanks to Stephen J. Jones who as co-author of the original research (Hill & Jones, 1990) continues to support and encourage this present work; to Mike Sullivan likewise for his support and encouragement, and particularly for his ideas and involvement in producing better maps and his initiative for making all the information available on a Web page; to Piotr Waclawek for producing routines within Matlab to calculate the sea ice area and to define the ice edge boundary in terms of latitude and longitude; to Don Spencer who provided a software routine for calculating the area from digitization of the Ice Charts as provided by Atmospheric Environment Service; and to Austin Bugden for creating a convenient table for displaying the incidents of ship collisions with icebergs.
Also to all my previous and current student staff I express my sincere thanks. Quite simply, without their help this project would have been as sunk as the Titanic. My thanks to M.U.N. work term student, Gary Bishop, 1988; Prince of Wales Collegiate co-operative students, Heather Chafe, 1992-93; Rani Danesh, 1995-96; Adam Greening, 2000 and Shawn Sellars, 2001; Women In Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E), Newfoundland high school participants Amy Tobin, 1994; Nancy Oldford, 1995; Janice Tricket, 1996; Kristen Ropson, 1997; Emily Roche, 1999; Margaret Senior, 2000; O'Donel High School Marine Youth Internship Program students, Thomas Perks, 1997-98, Chris Murphy, 1998; and International Exchange Sudents (IAESTE) Claus Gehe, 1998 and Christian Hove, 1999.
